In 1940, American soldiers called it "the best piece of enemy equipment we captured." They weren't talking about tanks or rifles—they were talking about a fuel can. The German Wehrmachtkanister could take a beating, stack efficiently, pour without spilling, and survive getting dropped from a moving truck. It was so good that every Allied nation stole the design and never looked back.

We cast ours in stainless steel and left it bare. No coating. No finish. Just raw metal that'll develop its own character as you use it. The pressed-X panels are decorative—a tribute to the original's structural ribs—but the silhouette is unmistakable. It's a Jerry can you can fit in your pocket, and it won't leak diesel all over your jeans.

This is the standard-issue variant. Not limited, not numbered, not trying to be precious about it. Just a well-made lighter that references a well-made fuel can from 85 years ago. Does it make wind rethink its choices? Look, we've tested it in some pretty questionable conditions.

Zippo insert inside. Windproof. Refillable. Makes that satisfying metal click that sounds vaguely like competence.

Comes in a Stash Book. Hides in plain sight on your shelf. Stores the lighter, or whatever else you're not discussing.

For people who appreciate when something just works—and keeps working.

    Frequently Asked Questions

My lighter arrived with marks on it. Is this normal?

Absolutely. Each Jerry Can Lighter gets the full spa treatment—hand-tuned and put through quality control by actual humans with actual hands. Thanks to the realities of metal casting and our finishing process, your lighter will have minor cosmetic quirks: a bit of pitting here, a scuff there. Think of them as beauty marks. These aren't mass-produced plastic toys—they're built like the tanks they're modeled after. Toss it in your pocket, use it like you mean it, and watch it develop a patina that'll make it look even better with age. Character is earned, not polished away.

Is the Golden Jerry Can Lighter made of brass?

Nope. All Gaslight Industries Jerry Can Lighters—including the Golden edition—are cast stainless steel. We'd love to use brass for that authentic vintage feel, but brass is softer than a strongly worded email and can't handle the intricate details our design demands. The Golden Jerry Can will still develop a gorgeous patina over time, though. And who knows? We might experiment with other materials in the future if we find something that can take the heat.

Can I swap inserts with a different Zippo insert?

Yes, our Jerry Can Lighters play nice with all official Zippo butane and lighter fluid inserts. However—and this is important—your lighter has been paired with its specific insert because Zippo's manufacturing tolerances are about as consistent as our ability to resist making terrible puns. If you want to swap in another insert, you might need to make some minor adjustments to the case itself. Nothing a little elbow grease can't handle.

Will the Gaslight Industries Jerry Can Lighter work with non-Zippo inserts?

Hard no. We've tested dozens of third-party inserts (Thunderbird, et al.) in the name of science, and they simply don't fit. It's Zippo or bust, folks.

Does the Jerry Can Lighter ship with fuel?

Unfortunately, no. Shipping regulations won't let us send you a prefilled lighter, no matter how nicely we ask. You'll need to supply your own butane. Think of it as BYOB, but for fire.

The Legacy Behind the Flame: A Brief History of the Jerry Can

Born in the late 1930s, the original jerry can—officially the Wehrmacht-Einheitskanister—was a triumph of functional engineering. Designed for military use, its purpose was simple but vital: safely store and transport fuel across unforgiving terrain, in any climate, under the harshest conditions. What emerged was a container so brilliantly practical that it became an icon of industrial design for nearly a century.

The jerry can’s signature stamped “X” reinforcement, triple-handle system, and seamless welded construction gave it unmatched durability and stability. Soldiers could carry it, stack it, drop it, and haul it for miles without fear of leaks or ruptures. Its shape wasn’t chosen for aesthetics—but its striking geometry quickly became synonymous with grit, reliability, and survival.

After World War II, the jerry can earned a second life far beyond the battlefield. It became a companion of adventurers, overlanders, farmers, mechanics, and anyone who valued rugged utility. Mounted on Jeeps, Land Rovers, and trail rigs around the world, it transformed from wartime hardware into an enduring cultural symbol of readiness and resilience.

Today, that legacy inspires the design of our signature lighter. The embossed X, the angular silhouette, the compact strength—each detail pays homage to a tool built to endure when everything else fails. By distilling the jerry can into pocket form, GasLight Industries captures the spirit of timeless engineering and channels it into a flame you can carry anywhere.

    This isn’t just a lighter.
    It’s a legacy you ignite.
